If you want to experience the real Indian life in Delhi you should visit the bazaars. Not only you’ll get a feel and taste (literally) of the Indian culture, but you’ll also come home with a lot of nice stuff. It’s common sense to assume that the merchandise –especially the DVDs and CDs- is fake.
Let’s take a look at the bazaars (markets) you can visit in Delhi and what you can buy while there.
Chandni Chowk
The bazaar is located in the heart of Old Delhi and is the best place to experience the real India. It’s crowded, it’s filled with tiny shops and the smell of the Indian food would probably make you hunt that rather than the bargains. You can find anything here from books, clothes and shoes to electronic and consumer goods.
Janpath
Just a short walk from Connaught place, this is the place to visit if you want to go back home loaded with cheap stuff. You can get a lot of nice clothes here and there’s also a flea market filled with pretty much anything you can think of. Don’t forget to bargain!
Palika Bazaar
In the center of Connaught Place you’ll find this underground bazaar. Looking for PC games and films? Don’t worry, you’ll find them here on CD, DVD, VHS and whatever other format you might think of. Goes without saying that most of the products are fake although you might find some genuine merchandise here as well. Always try the discs before you buy them and bargain only if interested in buying.
Sadar Bazaar
It’s the largest wholesale market in Old Delhi and where you’ll find a lot of household items. Like all markets in India, it’s crowded and buzzing with activity. Although a wholesale market, it also caters to retail buyers so don’t worry about wasting your time here. Toys and jewelry can also be found here. The bazaar is closed on Sundays.
